Completed Projects
Below are some highlights from previous projects Friends of McCutcheon has been able to complete because of your generosity. With your support, none of this would have been possible. Let's continue to work together to see all children thrive at McCutcheon Elementary.
We’re celebrating a significant milestone of 12 teachers and staff members starting or completing their journey toward ESL accreditation (the image above is outdated now! If you weren’t aware, we are supporting McCutcheon Elementary School staff with development grants toward their ESL (English as a Second Language) endorsement.
According to CPS’s website, for over 50% of McCutcheon’s students, English isn’t their primary language. As you can imagine, this creates a uniquely beautiful teaching environment where gaining ESL training will provide additional support to see all students and teachers thrive. |
As we wait for paperwork for our playground project to make it through all of the necessary channels, we created and installed a 100’ long banner! Additional shoutouts to the administration, board members, and neighborhood supporters for adding some much needed mulch under the trees. Lastly, we’ve brought new life into the gates and fence at the branch building with some long overdue maintenances.

The teachers and administration worked to find the best option for updating their math curriculum to support all students, kindergarten through 8th grade, including those whose primary language isn’t English. The picture below may look like a stack of boxes, but the books, professional development, online materials, and multi-lingual support will advance the school’s efforts to see all students succeed. Your generosity allowed Friends of McCutcheon to purchase 100% of this curriculum.

Friends of McCutcheon awarded McCutcheon Elementary a STEAM Summer Camp Grant to:
These posters were created by students after they visited the Planetarium, the first of four field trips. |
In the Spring of 2022, in 50 days, with the support of 96 individuals and businesses from 22 states and 5 countries, we were able to purchase 50 lockers for the Middle School. An incredible accomplishment in a short amount of time showcasing the power of working together for these kids.

In the spring of 2021, we were able to replace the deteriorated wood letters on the main building with 30' of new bright long lasting aluminum laminated PVC signage! This is just the next step at creating a bright, inviting presence from the street that matches the quality of the school.
In partnership with KOVAL, a local distillery, we were able to purchase and deliver TWENTY-SIX gallons of high quality hand sanitizer during the nationwide shortage to insure adequate supplies were available for our amazing teachers and staff.
|
In partnership with Verde, a local energy efficiency consultant, we were able to assess and meet a need of simplifying, improving, and investing in LED lighting throughout both the Main Building and Branch building. This investment will pay for itself through energy savings in less than a year, will reduce the engineer's time replacing lighting elements so focus can be put towards larger projects, and will create a bright, evenly lit environment when students are able to return.

NURTURE BY DAVID HEO
This pictures shows just a snippet of the 110ft long mural on the west face of the main building to brighten the entrance to the school.
This mural is called "Nurture" by David Heo.
This mural depicts John T. McCutcheon Elementary School's mission of a nurturing diverse community for all of their students. The abstracted shapes and energy in this mural draw inspiration from several flowers across from continents around the world represented inside the school. Within this mural are: violets, cherry blossoms, king proteas, qantus and tulips. These flowers are only native to specific regions of the world and by harmonizing them all together within this monochromatic garden, the artist interpreted the school mission of McCutcheon and manifested it into a visual flow of vibrancy for their students and all of the community of Uptown.
If you are near the building, please snap a photo, post it on social media and tag us! #friendsofmccutcheon

We are elated to be able to provide the funding to continue the rich partnership between FUSE Studio (a STEAM program) and McCutcheon Elementary School.

During a budget shortage, we were able to provide an advanced Content Management Software (CMS) for McCutcheon's Elementary School's website. Since then, a new site has been launched that is more cost efficient.
